Going Green on the Red Carpet
Posted on March 10, 2010 · Leave a CommentDesigners from all over the world vie every year to get their fashions and name mentioned on the red carpet at the Oscars. It pays off handsomely when a celebrity wears your design. However, MSU senior Jillian Granz got the opportunity to see her garment on the coveted walkway, seemingly before her time – and before she has a full line. Granz entered and won the Global Green USA’s Red Carpet Green Dress Contest with the grand prize being her design would walk the red carpet on Amis Cameron, wife of Avatar director James Cameron. This was an amazing feat, as Granz competed with student designers from all over the world.
At Sunday’s Academy Awards celebration, Suzy Amis Cameron stood by her director husband James wearing a flowing cobalt gown, designed by a Michigan State University student with the Earth in mind.

Repotting Houseplants
Posted on February 26, 2010 · Leave a Comment
Normally, I do really well with my houseplants until I attempt to repot them. They are usually growing really well and as soon as I want to separate the roots to give it more room, about a week after the plant is in its new home, it starts to wither and die. It’s so frustrating. I thought that I was doing it right but apparently I’m doing something terribly wrong. Next time, I’m going to try Martha Stewarts’s advice on repotting plants. Hunter’s Ridge, I’ll let you know how it turns out. If you have repotted plants and they flourished or flopped, let us know by commenting below.
Spring Break Should’nt Break You – How to Have Fun Without Going Broke
Posted on February 25, 2010 · Leave a Comment
When I was in college, I loved Spring Break. But because I was a poor college student, I never did any of the exciting spring break rituals like go to Cancun or Daytona Beach. My Spring Break consisted of going home and lounging on my parents couch, visiting other friends that were on spring break and on occasion, going out of town and visiting a college friend or relative for the week. Since then though, Spring Break va-cay has gotten a bit more sophsicated and elaborate. And so has the expense. This year, come back from Spring Break in the black by taking these students advice on how to have fun and not spend your “funds”. Hunter’s Ridge, where are you going for Spring Break? Clean Out Your Closet for Cash for Charity
Posted on February 24, 2010 · Leave a Comment
This summer, my girlfriends and I had two yard sales, selling everything from golf clubs to cameras to designer Nike sneakers. The money that we raised, we gave to a local womens shelter. Celebrities are now getting in on the giving. Kim Kashardian did it first. Now Oprah is opening her closet for a good cause. Starting March 1, you can to eBay and bid on clothes from Oprah’s closet, with the proceeds benefiting the Leadership Academy in South Africa. Bid on Oprah’s shoes, purses, and clothes that she has worn on the air and in everyday life. This is an excellent idea, don’t you think? And it is so simple. One (wo)man’s cute boots that hurt her feet are another woman’s shoe utopia.
We’ve all got closet issues—even Oprah. It could be impulse buying. Or a weakness for the pretty but impractical. Or the firm belief that someday—someday!—that jacket from 1993 will be in style again. With the help of O’s creative director, Adam Glassman, Oprah says farewell to dozens of old favorites, all being auctioned off soon on eBay to benefit the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa.

Ingredients
Serves 4
* 2 tablespoons canola oil
* 2 medium red onions, thinly sliced
* 8 ounces (2 1/4 cups) button or cremini mushrooms, thinly sliced
* 6 ounces (about 8 cups) prewashed spinach, shredded
* Coarse salt and ground pepper
* 8 flour tortillas (8-inch)
* 8 ounces (2 cups) pepper Jack cheese, shredded
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In a 12-inch skillet over medium heat, warm 1 tablespoon oil. Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, until lightly golden, about 5 minutes. Add the mushrooms; cook, stirring occasionally, until they’re tender, 6 to 8 minutes.
2. Add spinach in two batches, letting the first batch wilt slightly before adding the next; cook until spinach is completely wilted and mixture is dry, 2 to 3 minutes total. Season with salt and pepper.
3. Brush one side of tortillas with remaining tablespoon oil. Place 4 tortillas, oiled sides down, on two baking sheets. Layer each tortilla with cheese, spinach mixture, and more cheese, dividing evenly. Top with the remaining 4 tortillas, oiled sides up, and lightly press to seal.
4. Bake until cheese has melted and tortillas are golden brown, turning them once, about 10 minutes. To serve, cut quesadillas into quarters.
